Later in the summer, Leia performed the title role in Holst’s Savitri on the Filene Center stage. The previous summer, Leia made her debut with the company, in several digital projects, including portions of Orfeo ed Euridice, Eugene Onegin, and Serse.

In May 2020, Leia graduated from her two year tenure at the Houston Grand Opera Studio. During her time in the studio, she made her main stage debut as Frau Mary in Der fliegende Holländer (2018); covered the role of David in Handel’s Saul; curated recitals from the libraries of Shostakovich, Britten, and Howells; and performed in scenes programs featuring portions of Cendrillon (Massenet), La pietra del paragone (Rossini), Giustino (Handel), Semele (Handel), and Un ballo in maschera (Verdi). The end of her time in the studio was cut short due to the COVID pandemic, canceling performances of Die Zauberflöte and Salome.
Leading to her time at HGO, Leia competed in the 2018 Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers at Houston Grand Opera and was awarded the First Prize, as well as capturing the Online Viewers’ Choice Award, delivering a performance with “goosebump-inducing richness and beauty” (Houston Grand Opera).

Throughout her time in Houston, Leia competed in several competitions, including the Laffont Competition (formerly the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions), where she received 2nd Place in Gulf Coast Region (2020). That spring she earned first place in the Mary Jacobs Smith Singer of the Year Competition with Shreveport Opera.

The summers of 2018 and 2019 were spent in the mountainous deserts of Santa Fe, where she was an apprentice artist with the Santa Fe Opera. She covered roles in mainstage productions (Pasqualita in Doctor Atomic and Grandmother Buryjovka in Jenůfa); performed in scenes from Giulio Cesare, Orfeo, and Gianni Schicchi, as a part of the Apprentice Showcases; and was an active member in the chorus.

Leia completed her formal training at the University of Northern Iowa, where she earned her Bachelor of Music Education (2015) and Master of Music (2018) degrees. Although a small-town Iowa girl at heart, Leia has continued to broaden her horizons, beginning with her first professional debut in her home state at the Des Moines Metro Opera, all the way to cities across the globe.

Next Up, Leia will return to the Houston Grand Opera as the Abbess in Suor Angelica and later return to the Glyndebourne Festival Opera as Proserpina in L’Orfeo.

Stay tuned, stay safe!
